Barn Owl

The pale, silent hunter of fields and hedges.

About the barn owl

The barn owl hunts at dusk over rough grassland and field edges, quartering low and dropping on voles it hears in the grass. Its heart-shaped face funnels sound to its ears, and soft-edged feathers make its flight almost silent.

It nests in old barns, hollow trees and nest boxes put up by farmers and wildlife groups.

Based on plate 28, volume 1 of John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain.
