About the belted kingfisher

The belted kingfisher is the common kingfisher of North America. It is bigger and shaggier-crested than the kingfisher on British rivers, and unusually the female is the more colourful of the pair, with a rusty band across her belly.

Like ours, it fishes by plunging head first from a perch over the water and nests at the end of a tunnel dug into a riverbank.
