Eastern Screech-Owl

Audubon called this the Little Screech Owl. His plate puts both colour forms on one branch: grey birds and a rufous one. The two forms occur side by side and are the same species.

Despite the name, its usual call is a soft whinny and a long trill rather than a screech.

Based on plate 97 of Audubon's The Birds of America.
