Great Horned Owl

The big eared owl of the Americas.

About the great horned owl

Audubon painted a pair of great horned owls for plate 61, one hunched on a branch, the other turning towards the viewer with its ear tufts up. It is the largest owl over most of North America and will take prey as big as a skunk.

The tufts are feathers, not ears. The bird hears through openings hidden under the facial disc, which works like a satellite dish.

Based on plate 61 of Audubon's The Birds of America.
