About the osprey

Plate 81, the Fish Hawk, shows an osprey lifting a fish in its talons. Ospreys live almost entirely on fish and dive feet first to catch them.

They were wiped out as a breeding bird in Britain by 1916. A pair returned to Scotland in 1954, and ospreys now nest across Scotland and in Rutland, Wales and Northumberland, wintering in West Africa.

Based on plate 81 of Audubon's The Birds of America.
