Peregrine Falcon
Audubon's 'Great-footed Hawk', fastest bird on earth in a dive.
About the peregrine falcon
Audubon titled plate 16 the Great-footed Hawk and painted two falcons tearing at ducks they had caught. In a hunting stoop a peregrine has been measured at well over 200 mph.
Peregrines nearly vanished from Britain in the 1960s because of pesticides. They have since come back strongly and now nest on cliffs, quarries, cathedrals and city tower blocks.
Based on plate 16 of Audubon's The Birds of America.
