Snowy Owl

Arctic owl, painted by Audubon against a night sky.

About the snowy owl

Plate 121 shows two snowy owls perched in a dead tree at night. They breed on the Arctic tundra and hunt in daylight through the long summer.

Snowy owls still turn up in Britain now and then, usually in Shetland or the Scottish islands. A pair nested on Fetlar from 1967 to 1975, the only British breeding record.

Based on plate 121 of Audubon's The Birds of America.
